Tween 20 washing buffer, 0.5% in PBS (10X) is used as a wash solution for western blot membranes and microtiter plate wells in ELISA assays. It acts as a pH stabilizer in optimal formulation, salts and detergents designed to effectively remove excess material from membranes.

Tween-20 is a non-ionic surfactant that is useful for solubilizing membrane proteins during isolation. Tween-20 is also added to buffers for immunohistochemistry. Tween-20 may also help to prevent non-specific antibody binding and function as a blocking agent in immunoblotting assays.
