Periodic acid is a moderately strong oxidizing agent and the highest oxoacid of iodine. It exists as orthoperiodic acid (H5IO6) or metaperiodic acid (HIO4), and both forms have an oxidation state of +7. It can be used to cleave 1,2-difunctional compounds.
