Soda lime's ability to absorb carbon dioxide makes it valuable in medical and surgical professions. It is also used as powerful drying agent, or desiccant, in commercial and industrial usage. It is also useful for the construction of gas masks. It plays an essential role for the measurement of soil CO₂ efflux upon absorption. It is also useful for direct measurement of dissolved CO₂.
