A broad spectrum bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

  • Sulfamethoxazole is an antibiotic composed of an isoxazole with a 4-aminobenzenesulfonamido and methyl-group substitution at positions 5 and 3, respectively
  • Sulfamethoxazole carries out most of its action through the inhibition of dihydropteroate synthase, the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the precursor of folic acid; inhibition of folic acid synthesis prevents DNA replication and cell division in susceptible bacteria

Application

  • Sulfamethoxazole can elicit an allergic response and may be useful for immune cell studies in laboratory settings
  • Sulfamethoxazole is suitable for laboratory research on infection, environmental pollution, and the physiology of susceptible bacteria
RUO – Research Use Only
